Epilepsy is a central nervous system disorder in which brain activity becomes abnormal, causing seizures or periods of unusual behavior, sensations, and sometimes a loss of awareness.
Seizure symptoms vary depending on its type. Some of the signs could be temporary confusion, a staring spell, uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs, loss of consciousness or awareness, and symptoms such as fear, anxiety or deja vu. The seizures can broadly be classified into focal and generalised and depending on the condition, the medical treatment is planned.
While the causes of epilepsy are varied, people with epilepsy are more likely to have psychological problems, especially depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts and behaviors as they tend to feel more helpless and lose a sense of self. Any type of epileptic seizure could also potentially affect learning, memory, executive functions and other cognitive functions.
Hence alongside the pharmacological treatment, management of psychological wellbeing is also crucial.
