Humans are vulnerable to mental disorders if attachments do not develop properly or if the bonds are disrupted. The main goal of IPT is to address interpersonal deficits, including social isolation or involvement in unfulfilling relationships and improve the quality of a client’s interpersonal relationships and social functioning to help reduce their distress and to enhance their interpersonal skills.

IPT usually consists of one to sessions in which the therapist assesses symptoms and examines social history and close relationships, as well as any shifts in relationship patterns and expectations. The therapist also collaborates with the patient to develop recovery plans tailored to any perceived problem areas. A targeted problem area can change as treatment progresses.
